Layers, Flow; Life’s Journey
Life is full of friction—scratches, bruises, and even moments of breaking. Yet despite the pain, there come moments of comfort that make life bearable. These moments may become cherished memories or turn into regrets born of foolishness. In the realm of relationships, there is a constant cycle of loss and recovery, consolation and desolation, Severance and persistence. I have long been drawn to exploring the complexities of “relationships,” seeking visual forms to express those fleeting, inspired moments that arise from them. Sometimes these take the shape of phenomenological images within space, other times as iconic, almost literal symbols, or even as the figure of a child—representing lost time. Though the images I’ve created have been inconsistent in form, they have all stemmed from the same thematic core: relationships. For this exhibition, I’ve chosen to represent the flow of relationships through the image of the leek (green onion). As a common ingredient used daily in cooking, I began to see its life—being cut, then re-growing in water or soil—as a metaphor for the recurring cycles of disconnection and healing that occur within relationships. As a homemaker, I once believed that the tasks of cooking and caring for a family were far removed from the life of an artist. But I have come to understand that every moment given to me—whether as a mother, wife, or woman—can be perceived through the eyes of an artist. What once seemed trivial—the leek—has become a powerful symbol. It connects with memories long buried in my unconscious, rising from my childhood to fill the canvas.
Perhaps this body of work is a restrained, yet explosive, release of emotion—pure and instinctive—born from deep within.

Life’s Journey

Pink Sky 2025
oil on canvas, 48x48”
As the sun sets, the sky turns pink—as if the sun itself had burst open. The golden hues of the severed edges stand out even more vividly.-As someone who has long contemplated the nature of relationships, I am currently cultivating a scallion from nothing but its roots. Watching the severed leaves regenerate in water, I have often found myself wondering if our own relationships are not much the same. A relationship characterized by this cycle of rupture and recovery—of breaking apart and coming back together—is, in essence, a process in which precious, golden-hued experiences born of those very severances accumulate layer upon layer, gradually solidifying into something unbreakable.
Orange Tree 2025
oil on canvas, 60x48”
Walking along the forest path, I become a tree. My branches—vibrantly alive with an orange glow, like blossoms—blend harmoniously with my surroundings; and together, as a tree of distinct presence, I become the forest itself.
Memory of Colors 2025
oil on canvas, 48x48”
As a child, watching my mother create Hanbok, I was deeply struck by the interplay of complementary colors between the *jeogori* (jacket) and the *chima* (skirt). Naturally, I chose to employ this same use of complementary colors on my canvas; the collision and blending inherent in these opposing hues often yielded unexpected color mixtures. These intermingled colors transport me back to those moments of the past, evoking cherished memories.
Indigo Lake 2025
oil on canvas, 48x48”
The severed green onions grow together, forming a small forest as if quietly offering one another solace. To them, the slender crescent moon—reflected in the deep blue lake of the night—extends its own form as a source of comfort, appearing just as severed as they are.

The fundamental basis of the paintings—whether large or small, encompassing both the whole and its parts—was color. The hues of the paint revealed an unexpected harmony, discovered through the blending of colors from similar families with those that appeared to be their opposites.
